Biography

Nathan Collett was born in San Francisco , USA and grew up around the world in Venezuela , Australia , United States , Pakistan and Kenya . He makes his home in Nairobi , Kenya and has been researching in East Africa since 1997. He has made several award winning films including KIBERA KID which won seven awards including the 2007 student EMMY for best children’s film, and was covered extensively by international media including BBC and Reuters. Nathan studied African history at Stanford University , California where his honors thesis was a documentary on the revival of traditional religion in Kenya . He completed a postgraduate degree (Masters of Fine Arts) at the prestigious University of Southern California Film School .

Nathan founded Hot Sun Films and its non-profit arm Hot Sun Foundation to work with youth in Kibera, east Africa’s largest slum, to train and make films that present positive possibilities. Through media, Nathan hopes to change the world’s impressions of Africa and make it a better place for those on the lowest rung of society.

In 2009, Nathan has embarked on his most ambitious community film project to date – an historic first - the first fictional feature length film made by residents of an African urban slum. The story entitled TOGETHERNESS SUPREME which focuses on events in Kibera related to the 2008 post election violence in Kenya is a story of hope and reconciliation against overwhelming odds. Principal photography was completed in May 2009 and it is currently in post production.
