- Film Information & Synopsis
I wrote and directed "Michael Keys" way back in 2001 as my senior project in undergraduate school at Howard University. I was the first grant recipient when the foundation started issuing student production grants the Spring of 2001. I am so proud of this organization.
The film is about a mentally challenged man who runs away after learning that his sister and only living relative wants to move away without him to further her career. Michael Keys was used to get me accepted into the American Film Institute Conservatory.
- Festival Experience
Michael Keys didn't do well on the festival circuit for a variety of reasons. However, my graduate thesis film from AFI did a little better, "SNAPSHOT". It won best student film at the 2006 Hollywood Black Film Festival, was an official selection at the Urban World Film Festival in New York, a selection at the Urban Media Makers Film Festival in Atlanta, Worldfest Houston, and a few others. Of all the festivals, I enjoyed Worldfest Houston the most. It didn't feel like the artists were competing or trying to pull each other down as much as they were trying to get their films screened and establish relationships. People actually spoke to you and looked in your eyes and NOT what they could get from you or if you were the the next "it" director on the rise. My experience at that festival was a wonderful casual environment. I completely understand festivals vary.
Urban World was HORRIBLE and seemed a bit unorganized while the Hollywood Black Festival was okay, however, I felt it didn't spend time promoting shorts and I never received my prize from them to this day. I won best student film in 2006.
