- Biography
John McCoy was born in Washington, D.C. and grew up in Maryland. He’d wanted to be an
artist from a very young age. Ever since elementary school, nothing excited him like the arts,
but he didn’t know what kind of artist he wanted to be. Thrilled with the idea of marrying all art
forms – a concept filmmaking presented – he set his sights on making movies. In 1992, he
enrolled in Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia to study Mass Media Arts. There, he
stepped outside his major, becoming heavily involved in the theatre. He thrived in this
environment, working either on or off-stage on every production. Inspired by playwrights of
color, who engender social dialogue in their work, he sought to deepen his own artistic voice.
He went on to earn a BA degree in 1996.
Soon after, he followed his dream to Los Angeles, where he attended the University of Southern
California’s graduate film school. While there, he wrote, directed and produced a number of
award-winning short films including his thesis, “Echoes of the Dream,” a magical tale about a
father and daughter’s emotional connection on the day Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated.
That film received a grant from the Caucus Foundation for Television Producers, Writers and
Directors. McCoy earned an MFA degree in film production in 2002. Inspired by some of the
giants of the television industry at the Caucus Foundation, he turned his focus to something he
had always been passionate about – television.
McCoy has spent the last two and a half years on the ground floor of numerous network
television shows. He’s been able to observe the industry from the production offices to the
corporate offices. There, he developed a love and appreciation for the energy of television’s
creative, yet fast-paced climate. Now, he’s concentrating on writing for television, film and
theatre. He just finished a television pilot and is currently at work on a screenplay.
