A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Darryl Wharton-Rigby has worked diligently to create a niche for himself as a writer/director. He hails from a family of poets and storytellers. With an MFA in Film Directing from Chapman University, he was selected as an O.L. Hallsell Scholar and has earned awards from the The Caucus For Producers, Writers & Directors Foundation, Urbanworld Film Festival, the Maryland State Arts Council, the Painted Bride Arts Center in Philadelphia and the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame for his work.
Darryl worked for two seasons as a Writer for the critically acclaimed television series, “Homicide: Life On The Street.” While on the show, his teleplay “Sins Of the Father” was nominated for a 1999 NAACP Image Award.
In 1998 he completed his debut feature film “Detention,” which screened at festivals domestically and internationally. That project received numerous honors and awards, including “Best Director” at the Urbanworld Film Festival and the “Audience Award” at the Atlanta Film and Video Festival, and Best Feature Film from National Black Programming Consortium.
Darryl also worked as a Writer on the NBC teen dramedy “Just Deal”; and wrote “Table 22,” the first series pilot for B.E.T. Darryl is also the writer and director for the stage plays, “Freeda Slave” Mask of a Diva” and “Here Come the Drums” which both had a successful runs in Los Angeles.
From 2005 - 2007, Darryl was an English Teacher in Japan for elementary and jr. high school students. While in Japan he shot footage for a documentary titled, “Don Doko Dom,” about the Yamakiya Taiko Club.
He is currently a Lecturer at Morgan State University teaching film courses and completing post-production on his next project, “Prodigal.” He splits his time between Los Angeles and Japan and credits his wife and two sons as his ultimate muse.
